What Causes Acne Scars?

First of all, acne itself is caused when the oil glands in your skin get clogged with bacteria and dead skin cells. These clogs then cause an infection that appears on the skin as a red, inflamed bump.

Now, your skin gets its structure, tightness, and volume from a protein called collagen. As your body starts to heal the infection caused by acne, the collagen in your skin can get damaged. This damage appears on the surface of your skin in the raised or pitted scarring from acne.

What is Laser Acne Scar Removal?

Patients can experience dramatic, life-changing results thanks to laser therapy for acne scars.* Here’s a little bit more about how they work.

  • With laser therapy for acne scars, the goal is to jump start collagen production at the site of the scarring.
  • To do that, Dr. Sani uses the laser to produce intense heat deep inside the skin.
  • This heat triggers collagen production which, in turn, automatically smoothes out the scarring from acne.

Sometimes the procedure can be done in just one treatment–while other patients may need to come back for more. The treatments should last about an hour, sometimes less. While there is usually no discomfort, Dr. Sani sometimes uses a numbing cream before the procedure.*

Recovering from Laser Acne Scar Removal

Patients almost always ask what they should expect from the recovery process. Because Dr. Sani uses the Halo Laser by Sciton, the recovery process should be fairly easy.

For the first 24 hours, Dr. Sani will give you specific instructions for caring for your skin. After that, your skin will start to peel. Few patients see results after the first day. But after two to five days, you should see your initial results, and they will get better over time.*
